Aberdeen Angus Wins GUKPT Summer Series

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Retired accountant John Angus from Edinburgh has won the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Summer Series at the G casino in Aberdeen. He defeated deep-sea fisherman Pete Thomas from Orkney in a quick fire heads up encounter. In the final hand Angus had pocket sixes against Thomas’s A-8. The board of 3-K-5-3-6 gave Angus a boat to sink the fisherman and ship the title to Edinburgh. Poker journalist Nick Wright had been the chip leader going into the final, but was eliminated in third place by the eventual winner. Local player and online pro Martin Sutcliffe finished fourth, while Graham Doherty was the last player to make the money, taking fifth. Doherty was also declared the player of the series, as he cashed in all three events at the festival. Also making the final, but missing out on a cash finish were Germany’s Stefan Bormann, former professional footballer Alex Notman, Northern Ireland’s Ross Parkhill and Lennart Hansson from Sweden.

It was the first GUKPT event to take place in Scotland and although it was the smallest event on the tour in terms of numbers, it was conducted in good spirit. Just 42 players contested the main event, 44 took part in the £300 freezeout, while 79 sat down for the festival opening £200 freezeout. The GUKPT Summer Series continues on June 25th at the Grosvenor casino in Walsall.

All in…call

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Its all over. Pete made a raise and John moved over the top all in. Pete called, showing A-8, while John had pocket sixes.

The flop was 3 of hearts, the king of spades and the 5 of spades. No change to the situation, as John was still in front. The turn was the 3 of spades. Still no change. The river was the six of diamonds, so John’s boat sunk the fisherman and shipped the title to the Edinburgh man!

Congratulations to retired accountant John Angus, who wins £7,870 for first place and claims his seat in the Champion of Champions event. Orkney fisherman Pete Thomas takes home £5,780 for finishing runner up.

Heads Up

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

So, we have a John Thomas final two. Which one will end it by ringing the winning bell?

John Angus

Pete Thomas

Down to two

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Nick Wright is out in 3rd place. He pushed with A-J, reraising John Angus, who called with K-Q. The flop was 6-7-2. There was an 8 on the turn, but the king on the river settled the hand in favour of the Edinburgh man. Nick takes home £3,780 for his efforts.

Apologies for the lack of updates in the last half hour or so. I had to do a stint on the mic calling the action, while the TD took a tea break. Deep sea fisherman Pete Thomas supplied most of the banter, while I chipped in now and again. Maniac.

Martin Sutcliffe finishes 4th

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Down to three now. Martin Sutcliffe pushed all in with A-Q and was insta called by Pete Thomas, who had pocket kings. The board of J-3-8-7-T was no help, however he did pick up a flush draw on the turn. Martin exits with £2,100 for his efforts.

Graham Doherty out in 5th

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Graham Doherty, who has cashed in all three events this week is the 5th place finisher. In his final hand he had A-T and was up against John Angus’s pocket tens. The board was 4-J-8-2-J, so no improvement for the local hero.

Play has resumed

They have restarted now. Martin just moved all in, but found no callers.

Break Time

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

The five remaining players are now on a break. These are their chip counts.

Nick Wright - 190,300
Pete Thomas - 121,000
Martin Sutcliffe - 44,500
John Angus - 40,000
Graham Doherty - 28,300

When they return the blinds will be 2,000-4,000 with a 300 running ante.

Stefan Bormann out in 6th

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Stefan Bormann has been taken out in 6th by Graham Doherty. His K-6 was up against pocket jacks and although a six was the first card out, it was not enough to save the German soldier. Graham Doherty has now guarantee himself three cashes out of three at the festival this week. Nick Wright has also secured his second payday this week.

It’s not Alex’s day, man

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Alex Notman is out in 7th. He had pocket eights against Pete’s A-T but the flop of A-6-T flop was not what he wanted to see. No eight on the turn or river and it was an early bath for the former footballer.
